Mariners Reacquire Eugenio Suárez In Trade With Diamondbacks

The Seattle Mariners have made a significant move by reacquiring third baseman Eugenio Suárez from the Arizona Diamondbacks, aiming to bolster their lineup as they vie for the American League West title and a wild-card playoff spot. Suárez, who previously played for the Mariners during the 2022 and 2023 seasons, returns in exchange for infielder Tyler Locklear and right-handed pitchers Juan Burgos and Hunter Cranton.

Mariners General Manager Justin Hollander and President of Baseball Operations Jerry Dipoto emphasized Suárez's leadership and impact both on and off the field. Suárez, an All-Star this season, has demonstrated impressive performance with 36 home runs and 87 RBIs, maintaining a batting average of .248 over 105 games. Notably, he is the first player in MLB history to be traded midseason after hitting at least 35 home runs.

The Mariners are optimistic that Suárez's return will enhance their offensive capabilities, particularly in terms of power hitting. He is expected to complement catcher Cal Raleigh in the lineup, providing a formidable duo in the middle of the order. Suárez is set to replace Ben Williamson at third base, who has struggled with power production this season.

Currently, the Mariners are tied with the Texas Rangers for the third American League wild-card spot. The addition of Suárez comes at a crucial time, as Seattle prepares to face the Rangers in a pivotal four-game series. The Mariners are hopeful that Suárez's presence will provide the necessary boost to secure a playoff berth.

The players traded to Arizona—Locklear, Burgos, and Cranton—were rated among Seattle's top 20 prospects. This move reflects the Mariners' commitment to competing in the present while balancing the development of their future talent pool. Fans and analysts alike are eager to see how Suárez's return will impact the team's performance in the coming weeks.
