Blue Jays Remove Anthony Santander From Playoff Roster Due To Back Injury
The Toronto Blue Jays have made a significant roster change ahead of American League Championship Series Game 4 against the Seattle Mariners, removing outfielder/designated hitter Anthony Santander from their postseason roster due to a back injury. This decision, approved by MLB's medical director Dr. Gary Green, renders Santander ineligible for the World Series should the Blue Jays advance.
Santander, 30, has faced injury challenges throughout the 2025 season, limiting him to 54 regular-season games and five postseason appearances. After missing time earlier in the year with a shoulder issue, he aggravated his back in Game 2 of the ALCS and played briefly in Game 3 before being removed due to soreness. During the regular season, he batted .175 with six home runs and posted a .200 average in the playoffs.
To fill the roster spot, the Blue Jays have added 26-year-old outfielder Joey Loperfido, who boasts a .333 batting average over 41 games in 2025. Acquired from Houston in July 2024, Loperfido is poised to make his postseason debut. Manager John Schneider has also adjusted the lineup by moving Addison Barger to right field and starting Isiah Kiner-Falefa at second base.
This roster adjustment comes after a decisive 13-4 victory over the Mariners in Game 3, where the Blue Jays' offense showcased its potential. The team is now focused on maintaining momentum as they prepare for the upcoming Game 4, aiming to even the series and advance further in the postseason.
The Blue Jays' management has expressed confidence in the team's depth and adaptability, emphasizing the importance of every player contributing to the collective goal. With the series tied, the upcoming games are crucial for both teams as they vie for a spot in the World Series. Fans are eagerly anticipating the next matchup, hoping for a competitive and thrilling continuation of the ALCS.
