Jen Pawol To Make History As MLB’s First Female Umpire

Jen Pawol is set to become the first woman to umpire a Major League Baseball regular-season game, marking a significant milestone for gender inclusion in the sport. Scheduled to officiate during the upcoming weekend series between the Miami Marlins and the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park, Pawol will serve on the bases for both games of Saturday’s doubleheader and then take position behind the plate for the series finale on Sunday.

At 48 years old, Pawol has been a minor league umpire since 2016 and has officiated Spring Training games in 2024 and 2025. She is currently among 17 Triple-A call-up umpires eligible to substitute in MLB games. MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred highlighted her achievement as a reflection of her dedication and passion for baseball.

Pawol's promotion has been met with widespread support from contemporaries and trailblazers like Christine Wren and Pam Postema. Players and managers across the league have expressed appreciation for her promotion, recognizing it as a positive and inclusive step forward for baseball.

This event follows decades after Pamela Postema made history in 1988 by umpiring a spring training game. The Jackie Robinson Foundation also celebrated Pawol’s accomplishment, connecting her milestone to the league’s ongoing efforts to promote diversity.

Pawol views her achievement as a testament to perseverance and hopes it will inspire future generations. Her promotion signifies a progressive step in MLB's commitment to diversity and inclusion, paving the way for more women to participate in roles traditionally dominated by men.
