Jen Pawol To Make History As MLB’s First Female Umpire
Jen Pawol is set to make history as the first woman to umpire a Major League Baseball regular-season game. Scheduled to officiate during the upcoming weekend series between the Miami Marlins and the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park, Pawol will serve on the bases for both games of Saturday’s doubleheader and then take position behind the plate for the series finale on Sunday.
At 48 years old, Pawol has been a minor league umpire since 2016 and has officiated Spring Training games in 2024 and 2025. She is currently among 17 Triple-A call-up umpires eligible to substitute in MLB games.
MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred commended Pawol's achievement, highlighting it as a reflection of her dedication and passion for baseball. This milestone follows decades after Pamela Postema made history in 1988 by umpiring a spring training game.
Pawol's promotion has been met with widespread support from contemporaries and trailblazers like Christine Wren and Pam Postema. Now part of a small group of female umpires in the minors, Pawol views her achievement as a testament to perseverance and hopes it will inspire future generations.
As Pawol steps onto the field this weekend, she not only breaks a significant gender barrier but also sets a precedent for inclusivity and diversity in professional sports. Her journey from high school umpiring to this historic moment underscores the evolving landscape of baseball and the opportunities available to women in the sport.
