Jen Pawol To Make History As MLB’s First Female Umpire

Jen Pawol is set to become the first woman to umpire a Major League Baseball regular-season game, marking a significant milestone for gender inclusion in the sport. Scheduled to officiate during the upcoming weekend series between the Miami Marlins and the Atlanta Braves at Truist Park, Pawol will serve on the bases for both games of Saturday’s doubleheader and then take position behind the plate for the series finale on Sunday.

At 48 years old, Pawol has been a minor league umpire since 2016 and has officiated Spring Training games in 2024 and 2025. She is currently among 17 Triple-A call-up umpires eligible to substitute in MLB games. Her promotion to the major leagues is a testament to her dedication and passion for baseball, reflecting the league's ongoing efforts to promote diversity and inclusion.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred commended Pawol's achievement, highlighting it as a reflection of her dedication and an inspiring example for women and girls aspiring to work in the sport. This event follows decades after Pamela Postema made history in 1988 by umpiring a spring training game. The Jackie Robinson Foundation also celebrated Pawol’s accomplishment, connecting her milestone to the league’s ongoing efforts to promote diversity.

Players and managers across the league have expressed support and appreciation for Pawol's promotion, recognizing it as a positive and inclusive step forward for baseball. Her achievement is seen as a testament to perseverance and serves as an inspiration for future generations of women in sports.

As Pawol prepares to make history this weekend, her journey underscores the evolving landscape of professional sports, where barriers are being broken, and opportunities are expanding for women in roles traditionally held by men. Her presence on the field is a significant step toward greater inclusivity and representation in Major League Baseball.
