MLB Introduces Robot Umpires And Approves Rays Sale Amidst Playoff Pushes

Major League Baseball is set to implement significant changes in the 2026 season, including the introduction of the Automated Ball-Strike System , commonly known as "robot umpires," and the approval of the Tampa Bay Rays' sale to a new ownership group.

The ABS, approved by MLB's Joint Competition Committee, will allow teams to challenge ball and strike calls up to two times per game, with additional challenges available in extra innings. This system aims to improve call accuracy while maintaining the human element of the game. The decision follows extensive testing in minor leagues and spring training, where players favored the challenge format over full automation.

In other developments, MLB owners unanimously approved the sale of the Tampa Bay Rays to a group led by real estate developer Patrick Zalupski. This transition marks the end of Stu Sternberg’s ownership era, which began in 2005. The new ownership is expected to address the team's stadium situation, as the Rays have faced challenges in securing a permanent location.

On the field, the Milwaukee Brewers completed a three-game sweep of the Los Angeles Angels with a 5-2 victory, moving them closer to clinching the National League Central division title. Christian Yelich played a pivotal role, notching his 100th RBI of the season with a double during a decisive three-run rally in the seventh inning.

In a concerning incident, Cleveland Guardians designated hitter David Fry was hit in the face by a 99 mph pitch from Detroit Tigers pitcher Tarik Skubal during the sixth inning of a game on Tuesday. Fry was immediately carted off the field and taken to the hospital for further evaluation. Skubal expressed concern for Fry’s health, noting the importance of player well-being over the game.

These developments highlight the ongoing evolution of MLB, both in terms of technological advancements and team dynamics, as the league continues to adapt to the changing landscape of professional baseball.
