Wrigley Field To Host 2027 MLB All-Star Game
Major League Baseball has announced that Wrigley Field in Chicago will host the 2027 All-Star Game, marking the fourth time the historic stadium has been chosen for this honor. The last All-Star Game held at Wrigley was in 1990. The decision was influenced by recent renovations to the stadium and the surrounding neighborhood, spearheaded by the Ricketts family.
The announcement was made by MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred during a press conference in Chicago. He was joined by Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson, Illinois Governor JB Pritzker, and Cubs chairman Tom Ricketts. Governor Pritzker described Wrigley Field as "the perfect place" for the event. While the current collective bargaining agreement is set to expire after the 2026 season, Commissioner Manfred expressed confidence that a new agreement would be reached in time for the 2027 All-Star Game.
In other MLB news, the Philadelphia Phillies have made a significant move by acquiring elite closer Jhoan Durán from the Minnesota Twins. This trade has generated considerable excitement among fans and analysts, who view Durán as a potential game-changer for the Phillies' bullpen. Star slugger Bryce Harper and other team leaders have hinted that Durán could be the critical addition the team needs to secure a World Series title. The Phillies have struggled with their bullpen in recent seasons, ranking poorly in blown saves in the National League. Durán, known for his powerful 100-mph fastball and devastating curveball, is widely regarded as one of the best closers in baseball. Analysts have praised the move, with The Athletic describing it as a signature move by Phillies baseball operations head Dave Dombrowski.
Additionally, the Seattle Mariners have re-acquired third baseman Eugenio Suárez from the Arizona Diamondbacks. Suárez, who previously played for the Mariners from 2022 to 2023, has returned in exchange for infielder Tyler Locklear and right-handed pitchers Juan Burgos and Hunter Cranton. Mariners GM Justin Hollander and president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto highlighted Suárez’s leadership and impact both on and off the field. Suárez, an All-Star this season, has hit 36 home runs and 87 RBIs while batting .248 in 105 games. He is also the first player in MLB history to be traded midseason after hitting at least 35 home runs. Seattle hopes Suárez will boost its power alongside catcher Cal Raleigh. Suárez replaces Ben Williamson at third base, who has had limited power production. The Mariners are currently tied with the Texas Rangers for the third AL wild-card spot and start a crucial four-game series against them.
In a unique event, the MLB Speedway Classic took place at Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee, drawing a record crowd of 91,032 for a regular-season Major League Baseball game. Originally scheduled for Saturday, the game between the Atlanta Braves and Cincinnati Reds was suspended due to rain, after an entertaining pre-game show featuring performances by Tim McGraw and Pitbull. Fans returned on Sunday under better weather conditions, and the game resumed with the Braves trailing 1-0. Atlanta ultimately won 4-2, highlighted by Eli White’s two home runs—the first MLB home runs ever at the historic racetrack. The event also featured unique fan interactions, including racing car cutouts, baseball challenges simulating NASCAR activities, and grounds crew dressed in fire suits. One of the highlights was a lap by Bristol's "Home Run" car celebrating White’s homer. The spectacle was part of MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred’s initiative to bring baseball to unconventional venues, following similar events like the "Field of Dreams" games in Iowa. The unusually high attendance and festive atmosphere marked a successful debut for MLB at a racetrack, reinforcing the league’s efforts to grow its fan base creatively.
Looking ahead, the 2026 All-Star Game is set to be held in Philadelphia, with the 2027 All-Star Game scheduled for Wrigley Field in Chicago. These events are expected to showcase the rich baseball traditions of both cities and provide fans with memorable experiences. As the MLB continues to evolve, such initiatives highlight the league's commitment to innovation and fan engagement.
